Bokken & Shinai

Purchase Bokken

Bokken (木剣)
A bokken is a wooden practice sword shaped like a katana. In kendo, it is primarily used for practicing kata and for learning proper cutting technique and body movement without the risks of a live blade. Bokken training helps develop correct distance, timing, and spirit, and is an important complement to shinai practice.

Purchase Shinai

Shinai (竹刀)
A shinai is a practice sword made of split bamboo, designed to safely simulate a Japanese sword during sparring. In kendo, the shinai is used for all free practice (keiko) and matches, allowing practitioners to strike with full speed and power while minimizing risk of injury. Training with the shinai develops accuracy, timing, and spirit in a realistic yet safe way.
